Batting For Dubai’s Labourers: Du Sponsors Cricket Tournament In Jebel Ali

Published Aug 20, 2009
Swinging bats and balls were part of a recent action packed cricket tournament organized by labour committee for Dubai labourers under du’s sponsorship.

Over 800 construction workers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other nations gathered to watch several exciting matches between seven teams of their compatriots in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Industrial Area.

Avid spectators included Major General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri,Director General of the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department (DNRD), along with other government officials and several du representatives.

A du kiosk was set up at the tournament to offer players a chance to pick up ‘Alo’ prepaid mobile SIM packs, designed specifically to meet the needs of the UAE’s expatriate labour workforce.

Developed in partnership with the Permanent Committee of Labour Affairs in Dubai, du’s ‘Alo’ prepaid line offers customized features for the thousands of expatriate labourers who contribute to nation building in the UAE.

‘Alo’ benefits include no joining or renewal fees, an initial credit of AED 10, Pay by the Second billing and 15% extra credit on every WoW recharge.

Each colourful ‘Alo’ prepaid SIM pack comes with a multi-lingual user guide and a wallet that workers can use to carry their valuables.

Seven construction companies Dulsco contracting, Al Farah contracting, Wade Adams, Al Naboodah contracting, Ghantoot contracting, Khansaheb contracting and Melubco fielded teams at the tournament.

A total of 77 players participated, with Al Farah and Melubco overcoming intense competition to emerge victorious.

Players from the winning teams received mobile handsets and other prizes from du for their ‘pitch perfect’ efforts.

“du is proud to support initiatives that improve quality of life for Dubai’s hard working construction labour force as part of our commitment to corporate social responsibility,” said Hala Badri, EVP Brand and Communications.

“The ‘Alo’ prepaid line is tailored to fit labourers’ needs and helps them stay connected with their families for reasonable rates. It also gives them easy access to the toll free Labour Affairs helpline to ask questions and address concerns. Going forward, du will continue to ‘add life to life’ for UAE labourers with more special events”.

As part of its partnership with du, the Permanent Committee of Labour Affairs in Dubai can broadcast messages to all ‘Alo’ customers, which means that the lines of communication are kept open in both directions. The toll free helpline number for workers is 8009119.

Customers can subscribe to ‘Alo’ at the two ‘Alo’ shops located in the Permanent Committee of Labour Affairs office near the Sonapur and Jebel Ali labour camps.
