Google Launches Competition To Find Egyptian Entrepreneurs

Google has announced the launch of a new competition to find the next generation of Egyptian entrepreneurs, with EGP 1.2 million ($200,000) of seed funding as first prize.

The competition, called إبدأ with Google, will run for eight months, and aims to encourage start-ups in areas such as cloud computing, digital advertising, e-commerce, mobile applications, location based applications, SME enablement and Arabic content.

The competition is being conducted in partnership with local NGO the Science Age Society (SAS) and a local technology incubator, Innoventures.

SAS and Innoventures will carry out a roadshow around ten cities in Egypt, and the 200 best applicants will then be invited to a three day workshop with Google, to provide them with training and further whittle down the contestants.

The leading one hundred entrepreneurs will then receiving further mentoring, and exposure to angel investors, before the final 20 will compete for the main prize in May 2012.

"Google is passionate about growing internet ecosystem in Egypt. The aim of إبدأ with Google is to inspire Egyptians to start their own technology ventures and have a series of working models online which directly benefit the Egyptian economy" said Wael Fakharany, country manager for Google North Africa.

"إبدأ with Google couldn't have come at a better time, the impact will be felt nationwide and will provide hope to many Egyptians seeking to fulfil their dreams," said Mohamed Aboud, business development consultant at Science Age Society.
