Safenet Addresses Data Breaches In The Middle East

Published Dec 14, 2011
SafeNet, Inc., a global leader in data protection has recently attended the 2011 PCI & E-Crimes forum Abu Dhabi, a global event that brings together senior decision makers, technical experts, as well as leading professionals across the Middle East. The forum focused on tackling the development of e-commerce security, payment risk and the management of compliance programmes.

Mike Smart, SafeNet’s Product and Solutions Director for Europe, Middle East and Africa and also one of the key note speakers at the event, explains, “In the Middle East more and more business are moving to online trading and internet banking thus increasing the requirement for proper security compliance and solutions. Data breaches have grown exponentially this year, 45% of which involved the theft of authentication credentials, an alarming figure indeed. Unfortunately a large number of companies still rely on username and password to give access to their end-users, and this is an information that is not difficult to get for hackers: in fact 67% of data thefts were perpetrated through guessable credentials. We are currently working on a number of high- profile projects in both the banking and government sectors in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE aimed at building an effective and cost-efficient shield against this threat.”

SafeNet recently conducted a data security survey report among 171 IT security executives across EMEA. According to the report, 46% of respondents stated that security in a virtualized environment is a top priority while 52% stated that only Cloud Security is of a higher importance. The report shows that encryption of sensitive information has become a significant focus for enterprises and financial organisations throughout the MEA region where governance and regulatory compliance are stringent and growing requirements.

Certain industry sectors across the region have already started to seriously take action when it comes to adopting IT security solutions and these include: finance, governmental organizations, healthcare, retail and manufacturing. There’s no excuse for an organisation that we entrust with our data to not to have taken steps to improve data protection. The combinations of encryption and authentication technology are readily available and proven to work. “, concluded Mike Smart.

For over a decade, SafeNet has been present in the Middle East market as a leader in data protection, with the demand for its solutions registering a dramatic increase in the last year (over 70% compared to the year before), confirming that the region has the biggest growth in EMEA. “
