Expert Calls For Correcting Sizes Of Air Conditioning In UAE For Better Benefits To End-Users

A regional chilling and AC expert has urged constructors and real estate developers in the Gulf to correct the sizes of current air conditioning and set the right sizes for future air conditioning for the benefit of end-users.
Engineer Mohammed Swairjo, General Manager of Al Reyadah, a UAE based contracting company that serves clients in the Gulf region, says: “The Gulf region is one of the largest users of conditioning in the world, as it needs air-conditioning for more than nine months a year. Over-sizing or under-sizing the power of the air conditioning systems in a building will cause harm to end-users and building owners in the long run. Builders and contractors are usually in charge of selecting the AC type in homes as air conditioning systems are normally purchased through a builder or contractor and not directly by homeowners.”
Swairjo added: “There is a general misconception that a bigger size is better for providing more effective service but this is not always true. At the same time, a unit that is too small will run continually without cooling the room effectively, while an oversized unit will lose efficiency and the ability to properly dehumidify the room.”
Swairjo added: “Correctly sizing the unit to a building unit should be at the top of the priority list of contractors and real estate developers so as to extend the life of the AC as well as enable customers to enjoy a higher quality service.”
In addition to cooling the treated air with a refrigerant, central AC lowers the relative humidity of the inside air to between 40% and 60%. This creates a comfortable environment without leading to the damp or clammy conditions created by an oversized air conditioning system, not to mention the higher initial cost of the larger AC compared with the right size one.
Under-sizing the system would be equally bad, as it would take longer to reach the desired temperature and humidity levels, causing the compressor to be constantly running.
There is a proper and scientific method for calculating AC sizes recommended for use by professionals in the trade. It consists of taking information about the buildings’ construction materials, insulation levels, number of windows, sizes of rooms and doing a calculation based on these factors to determine the appropriate cooling requirements.
An air conditioner of correct size will remove humidity effectively as it cools. An AC unit that is oversized will turn on and off too frequently, leading to loss of efficiency and the ability to properly dehumidify the home. This may result in higher utility bills and a less comfortable home. A unit that is undersized will run too often reducing the cooling ability.
Air conditioners cool by passing air over refrigerant coils that have fins which look like an automobile radiator. A compressor sends the cooled refrigerant through the coils, and the air gets cooler as it is forced over the coils.
As far as energy savings are concerned, air conditioning has been getting a way better in recent years. Manufacturers have worked hard to adhere to energy efficiency guidelines as well as manufacturing longer-lasting models with condensers running at much lower consumption ratings than ever before.
Central air units are compared against each other by their Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). This is a good indicator of the energy draw of a particular unit. The higher the SEER rating, the better the energy efficiency for that system will be.
Al Reyadah’s scope of services includes complete supply, installation, operation, testing, commissioning, maintenance and P.M. of the entire Electro-mechanical HVAC & Civil, Plumbing, Electrical as well as IT and Audio / Visual systems.
