Nokia Shuns Symbian For New Linux Model

Nokia is giving its Symbian operatingsystem a break and will be coming out with its first Linux-based smartphone inOctober.

The N900 runs on Maemo 5, which allowsusers to have dozens of applications running simultaneously.

Other featuresinclude a slide out QWERTY keyboard, a touchscreen and personalised homescreen similar to the N97, 32GB internal storage, and a 5 megapixel camera.

"With Linux software, Mozilla-basedbrowser technology and now also with cellular connectivity, the Nokia N900delivers a powerful mobile experience," says Anssi Vanjoki, executive VP,Markets, Nokia.

"The Nokia N900 shows where we are going with Maemo andwe'll continue to work with the community to push the software forward. What wehave with Maemo is something that is fusing the power of the computer, theinternet and the mobile phone, and it is great to see that it is evolving in excitingways".

The Nokia N900 will be available in selectmarkets from October 2009 with an estimated retail price of EUR 500, but there’s no word yet on when it will be made available in the Middle East.
