Googles social networking ghost town

Search engine giant Google has been pouring a lot of energy into its own social networking site Google+, but according to a report by statistics and tracking website comScore, things are not looking good.
The report noted that Google+ users only spent 3.3 minutes on the website in January 2012, while users spent 4.8 minutes on the network in December and 5.1 minutes in November 2011. This does not bode well for Google, especially since CEO Larry Page in January announced the site currently has 90 million users.
“By building a meaningful relationship with our users through Google+ we will create amazing experiences across our services. I am very excited about what we can do in 2012 — there are tremendous opportunities to help users and grow our business,” Page said at the time.
To put the 3.3 minutes in comparison, users of Facebook spent an average of around seven to eight hours a month on the world’s largest social network. “Users also spent less time on Google+ during that period than they did on Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, Tumblr, and even Pinterest,” PC Mag wrote.
According to the comScore report, MySpace users clocked in at eight minutes, LinkedIn at 17 minutes, 21 minutes on Twitter, and close to 30 minutes for Tumblr and Pinterest.
While the report might give an indication, comScore’s data did not take into account visits from mobile devices, and a Google spokeswoman told The Wall Street Journal that comScore’s figures on Google+ usage are “dramatically lower” than Google’s internal data.
