Dr. Ensheiwat: Academic And Scholarly Institutions Should Engage In Online Arabic Content Development

Published Apr 1, 2012

Jordan occupied the first rank among Arab countries with a rate of 75% as the major contributor to the Arabic content on the Internet which amounts to less than 3%, according to a recent study conducted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

In his comment, Chief Executive Officer of SSS Process, Dr. Alaa Ensheiwat, said: “There is no doubt that this achievement conferred a substantial benefit to Jordan, which has been able to play a key role in building and enriching the online Arabic content in spite of its limited resources and relatively small population when compared to other Arab countries like Egypt and Saudi Arabia."

"The problem lies in the fact that the size of the digital Arabic content does not exceed 3%, and, therefore, cannot be weighed against English or any other International language, especially given the fact that the largest part of this content is translated either literally or freely," he added.

Warning of the aftermaths of such shortage on the upcoming generations, Dr. Ensheiwat called for public and private sector institutions to take their responsibilities and help end the suffering of Internet users seeking out web content in Arabic.

He also highlighted the importance of engaging Arab universities in the process of increasing the Arabic digital content through encouraging university students to publish their academic and scholarly output such as graduation projects and dissertations on the Internet. Furthermore, Dr. Ensheiwat suggested opening the door for youth to participate in the translation of selected articles from any language to Arabic to satisfy the needs of Internet users in the Arab world.

Remarkably, more than 46% of Saudi Arabic web content is devoted to different fields of medicine as well as other environmental and health-related issues, while Egypt (15%) and Syria (10%) occupied the second and third positions respectively.
