The second batch of Panasonic sponsored students have enrolled in the Environmental Science Bachelor Degree Program at Abu Dhabi University, it was announced today.
This year, Fathima Sahla Kandeni, Azza Esamaddin Mohammed and Dania Tammam Al Tabbaa have been selected on merit. Panasonic so far has selected 6 students for the program to date, and the company will continue its sponsorship for a further year.
The scholarship program is one of many initiatives under Panasonic’s declaration to become the Middle East and Africa region’s No. 1 Green Innovation Company, as a part of Panasonic's group-wide global commitment to drive eco-innovation in the world by 2018, the 100th anniversary of its foundation.
The first batch of students under Panasonic sponsorship recently completed their first year of studies. This sponsorship is in keeping with Panasonic Middle East and Africa’s (PMMAF) goals set under its ‘Eco Ideas Declaration’.
Furthermore, at the university, Panasonic is screening a 3D video of its “Smart Township” to help educate students on how to create the next-gen power-generating and power-saving infrastructure from the ground up. Panasonic will also be showing just how green a town can be when various technologies are stacked together and work in unison.
“As the second batch of students under Panasonic sponsorship get ready to begin their environmental studies at Abu Dhabi University, Panasonic, as a socially responsible company, is determined to contribute towards the preservation of our environment. Here in the Middle East, we need more environmental sciences graduates to help preserve our critical and fragile ecosystem, as the fast-paced development in the region is having an increasingly negative impact,” commented Mr. Seiji Koyanagi, Managing Director of Panasonic Marketing Middle East FZE
“Abu Dhabi University is a pioneer in the field of education and was a natural choice for Panasonic,” added Koyanagi.
Panasonic has been leading environmental initiatives tailored to support local communities. The pledge for the Middle East underscores Panasonic's commitment to offer a green lifestyle to the people of the region, as well as pursuing a green business-style in its everyday business activities.
“Through the partnership between Panasonic and Abu Dhabi University, we are able to support the mutual goal of protecting the environment while also providing opportunities for students to succeed academically and in their future careers," commented the Provost of Abu Dhabi University Dr. James Mackin.
"As an educational institution, we have a responsibility towards the environment. By working with Panasonic, we can help deserving students realize their aspirations of building an environmentally friendly future," added Mackin.
Other initiatives launched under the ‘Eco Ideas Declaration’ include the Panasonic - WWF partnership project, which is designed to empower catchment communities, schools and regional partners with knowledge, motivation and abilities for the sustainable use and management of natural resources.
Panasonic further aims to double the regional sales of Superior Green Products by March 2013. Superior Green Products, which have been internally certified by Panasonic, have achieved the industry's top environmental performance in terms of energy saving, effective utilization of resources and the management of chemical substances.
Furthermore, Panasonic aims to educate 100,000 of its customers in the next three years by celebrating a Green Day on the first Friday of every month. By utilizing its showrooms across the region, which will be kitted out with Eco Kiosks, Panasonic aim to raise awareness on energy and water conservation, and waste management. Customers, plus card members and children can learn from the showroom staff and eco-booklets which will be made available.
