averda Turns TEDxEducationCity into a Zero Carbon Event

Published May 3, 2012

averda, the region’s largest environmental solutions provider, assisted the recently-held TEDxEducationCity to be billed as a fully sustainable event, thanks to recycling services provided by the company. The one-day event, sponsored by averda, has joined the drive to produce fully sustainable events in Qatar.

Featured at the event were five Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs), five averda PROSHRED® consoles and an averda PROSHRED® truck, in addition to averda’s stand, at which the RVM was demonstrated.

The RVM represents a revolutionary and exciting new initiative allowing consumers to participate in ‘doing good’ through recycling, by delivering a simple message: Recycle Redeem Reward. Consumers deposit select recyclables into the RVM in return for a voucher, which can be redeemed at various outlets.

averda PROSHRED® is an on-site, confidential document shredding business and recycling service, which saves companies money and time while contributing positively to the environment.

“Our vision is to inspire people by passionately delivering solutions that cater to our environment, our communities and our world. By having the privilege to participate in events like TEDxEducationCity, we are able to demonstrate the ways in which individuals can make a difference to the world around them, while also showing that the potential for large-scale events to have a minimal environmental impact,” said Malek Sukkar, CEO, averda. “We hope to have left a positive impact on the Doha community, and that those who have learnt the value of a greener environment will continue to spread the word for a brighter future for all of us.”

During the event, averda was responsible for the collection of paper waste as well as the collection of plastic bottles for recycling.

The environmental solutions provider held a competition amongst the attendees, predominantly university students or university hopefuls, to see who could collect the most redemption vouchers from recycling using the RVMS. Several awards were presented to some of the winners who recycled the most during the day.

Tarek Khouri, averda Qatar’s Managing Director, commented that the event was a great success from both an organizational and environmental perspective. He added, “averda is proud to be a part of Qatar’s continual drive to promote sustainability and environmental awareness, and we are pleased with what TEDx was able to achieve with averda’s assistance. The excitement that was generated by the RVM machine was electric; seeing the students line up to redeem the plastic bottles was very satisfying and gives us hope that our future is in safe hands."
