Kaspersky Lab Releases New Version of Kaspersky Anti-Spam Software Development Kit

Published May 24, 2012

Kaspersky Lab announces the release of a new version of the company’s anti-spam product – Kaspersky Anti-Spam 5.0 Software Development Kit (KAS SDK). Kaspersky Anti-Spam SDK is a ready-for-use set of anti-spam tools that can be easily incorporated into any IT security product, be it a standalone anti-spam solution, comprehensive IT security suite, or a Unified Threat Management hardware solution. Used by the world’s leading IT security companies and national ISPs, Kaspersky Anti-Spam Software Development Kit combines the latest automated anti-spam technologies and human analysis, providing first-class detection and the lowest false positive rates, and ensuring an instant reaction to new spam outbreaks.

Spam, originally viewed as little more than a nuisance, has evolved into a veritable scourge of the Internet, causing enormous damage due to lost employee productivity, clogged data channels and even system infections due to malware-laden mail. Formerly sent by script kiddies and rogue ISPs – harmful, but relatively easy to deal with – now spam is broadcast by powerful botnets comprising hundreds of thousands of ‘zombie’ PCs and capable of sending millions of spam messages every minute. As a result, spam mail comprises up to 90% of all email traffic.
“The release of Kaspersky Anti-Spam SDK 5.0 signifies a big step in our fight against this threat,” says Eugene Kaspersky, Chairman and CEO of Kaspersky Lab. “It’s simply impossible to fight malware without addressing the spam threat - this is basically the bread and butter of the worldwide cybercrime economy. Spam includes malicious attachments or links to websites used to infect unsuspecting users with viruses and Trojans, and shanghai their computers into botnets. And then botnets go on spam-sending sprees, infecting other users – and generating a tidy profit for their masters in the process. This is the vicious circle that we intend to break using our latest anti-spam product.”

Kaspersky Anti-Spam 5.0 Software Development Kit utilizes Kaspersky Lab’s landmark Hybrid approach, which gives access to cloud-based intelligence and information distribution together with advanced offline protection technologies. Thanks to the millions of users signed up to Kaspersky Security Network, any new spam message becomes tagged as such in a matter of seconds, and a corresponding signature gets added to the anti-spam databases with the next update (no later than 10 minutes). A powerful anti-spam engine based on various detection methods adds smarts to the cloud mind’s power and guarantees unparalleled detection rates for spam and phishing attacks while keeping false alarms to a minimum.

Kaspersky Anti-Spam 5.0 Software Development Kit is the result of several years of research and development, and incorporates numerous state-of-the-art tools and features. KAS SDK v.5 provides its host application with the following functionality:
• Text Signature Analysis (“Fuzzy” and Words & regular expressions comparison algorithms)
• Linguistic heuristics (22+ categories)
• DNS-based methods (DNSBL, Sender Policy Framework, Reverse DNS Lookup, Spam URL Blacklists)
• Analysis of formal message attributes (headers, sender IP analyses, etc.)
• Blacklisting/Whitelisting (IP, emails, phrases)
• Native 64-bit support for all platforms
The following technologies are unique to Kaspersky Lab:
• Graphical spam processing (GSG) technology blocks all types of graphical spam
• Urgent Detection System – real-time cloud technology that blocks the newest and fastest spreading spam. Based on Kaspersky Security Network – a huge distributed network of over 40 million users worldwide
• SMTP Analyzer – to detect spam early, before the message even reaches the mail server
• 24x7x365 Anti-Spam Lab team of professional linguists
• Updated every 5 minutes – signatures, spam-filtering rules, heuristic algorithms, etc.
