Egypt To Regulate Promotional Offers By Mobile Operators

Published Sep 14, 2009
Starting the first week of October the NTRA will announce new rules and regulations organizing the promotional offers made by mobile players and internet service providers.

According to a legal counselor at the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (NTRA), the new regulations aim at achieving stability in the Egyptian telecommunications market after mobile players made aggressive offers which triggered several complaints from some market players.

Earlier this week, Egypt threatened to punish mobile phone operators with a freeze on new customer lines if they keep prices lower after the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Main operators Mobinil and Vodafone Egypt have offered customers phone calls as cheap as LE 0.05 (one cent) a minute during Ramadan, which ends by September 20.

Communications and Information Technology Minister Tarek Kamel said the offers were harming other companies, apparently referring to the government’s landline operator Telecom Egypt.
