Nawras Powers New Hi FM And Hala FM Studios In Record Breaking Time

Published Aug 12, 2012

Nawras, Oman’s customer friendly communications provider, has successfully designed and installed a customised fibre optic solution to power the exciting, new Hi FM and Hala FM studios at Muscat Grand Mall. Nawras is proud to be providing the communications for the first radio station in the Sultanate of Oman to be broadcasting using just fibre optic broadband and microwave signals.

General Manager of Hi FM and Hala FM, Darren Shortt, said, “I am a long time believer in innovation and a heavy supporter of Nawras, but I have to say that the Nawras team has knocked me off my feet yet again, with this project. Never before has a radio station in Oman been set up purely on fibre and microwave as most stations around the world rely heavily on analogue. Nawras has delivered a massive move for us. It has saved us time and money and also provided a superior service.”

He added, “We are also delighted with the outside broadcast solution that Nawras has provided which is much more robust and reliable than the previous service we had. We can now deliver high quality audio for remote shows from anywhere in the Sultanate covered by 3G.”

Wolfgang Wemhoff, Chief Technology Officer at Nawras, said, “This was an incredibly exciting project for Nawras. In record time, we were able to develop and deliver a full package of connectivity with a tailor made solution Digital Network.”

Wemhoff explained that whereas most radio stations around the world transmit their programming using analogue systems, the new Hi FM and Hala FM studio is completely digital and linked directly to the broadcasting station in Ruwi by fibre optic cabling.

On this occasion, Nawras delivered the swift movement of a live broadcast studio from a legacy copper network to a new fibre optical Next Generation Network. This was completed in record time while maintaining services on air. The radio station now benefits from a reduction in transmission time, an extreme crisp voice quality and incredible internet speed.

Engineers from Nawras worked around the clock during the challenging, final construction stage of the studios. Led by Khalid Sultan, Service Delivery Manager and ably supported by Mir Yaqoob Ali, Expert – FTTX Design for Data and ISDN broadcast connectivity and Iftikhar Ahmed, Expert – IGW, the team designed and delivered a unique solution in less than a quarter of the time such a complex task would usually take.

A member of the Qtel Group, Nawras constantly seeks new and better ways to enthuse customers and exceed expectations. By delivering pioneering solutions and flexible communication packages, Nawras demonstrates a strong commitment to enriching the lives of people in the Sultanate of Oman through better communication services.
