Telecom Egypt Nears Deal On Mobile Fees: Report

Published Sep 16, 2009
Egypt's fixed line telephone monopoly Telecom Egypt (TE) is finalizing a deal to resolve a two year dispute over interconnection fees with two Egyptian mobile operators.

Under the agreement, TE would charge mobile operators Mobinil and Vodafone Egypt LE 0.07 ($0.01) per minute for calls from land lines to mobiles, TE chief executive Tarek Tantawy told the business daily Al-Alam Al-Youm.

Also as part of the deal, Mobile companies would pay TE LE 0.115 for calls from mobile telephones to land lines, Tantawy said.

"Implementation of the new agreement should take place within weeks," he said.

TE officials were not available for comment.

The two mobile operators, which have been seeking a higher tariff for fixed to mobile calls, have both appealed against interconnection rates set last year by Egypt's telecoms regulator, telecoms analysts say.
