Intel Reaches the Final Milestone of Its 8000 PC Initiative

Published Oct 9, 2012

As part of the Intel World Ahead Program ongoing commitment to education by offering unparalleled education solutions and digital accessibility to the society through advanced technologies and enabling 21st century education skills to Egyptian youth, Intel announced today the completion of its 8000 PC initiative deployment in Egypt.

This initiative, which started at the World Economic Forum in 2006, is part of Intel’s global commitment to education and growing ICT penetration in the Arab world and Egypt. Through its partnership with the Ministry of Education, Intel committed to donating 8000 PCs to 320 schools across governorates in Egypt including: Alexandria, Aswan, Beni-Suef, Cairo, Fayoum, Minya, and Qena.

Today in collaboration with the USAID funded Technology for Improved Learning Outcomes Project (TILO), an organization focused on improving student learning outcomes through the effective use of technology in education, Intel reached the final milestone of deploying 1000 PCs to a total of 65 schools, each receiving 25 Intel ®Classmate PCs. A total of 320 Egyptian public schools have been deployed with PCs since the start of this initiative. The TILO project partnered with Intel and the Ministry of Education to integrate the Intel ®Classmate model in 65 schools across 7 governorates in Egypt. TILO completed the model in each school and provided extensive pedagogical training to teachers and school management on how to integrate the technology in the daily teaching process.

During a visit to Helwan El Gedida today, one of the public schools that received 25 Intel® Classmate PCs, Intel Egypt Education Business Development Manager Sameh El Maleh said today “This initiative marks an enormous achievement in Intel’s World Ahead Program. Our aim is to provide Egyptian students with the required 21st century skills to compete in today’s world. Education and Innovation is key to building Egypt’s future”

"While training students on the use of Intel® Classmate PCs, we noticed that these computers have become the lifeline for both teachers and students, bringing them out of the world of the conventional classroom and pure school curriculum to the new and modern world of knowledge and practice. The adaptabilities and speed of these computers, and the fact that they are easy to move and use, facilitated the mission of the teachers, made these computers appealing to students, and invigorated active learning and integration of technology into the educational process." said the TILO Program Senior Trainer for Cairo, Ezzat Abdillah.

According to TILO, less students were absent during the use of PCs inside the classroom, and it was also noticed that the use of technology and the TILO program enriched the day-to-day classroom activity, leaving a positive impact on students' academic performance and achievement levels and making the classroom setting an attractive place for students.

“We are grateful for Intel’s extensive support on this project, and it’s continued collaborative efforts with educators to advance global competitiveness of Egyptian youth” said Ministry of Education Chief Information Officer Eng. Mohsen Ebeid.

The Intel® Classmate PC is a small, mobile, multi functional PC developed specifically for young students (K-6). This child-friendly, rugged and affordable learning device aims to create a suitable learning environment through 1:1 personalized learning which consists of both the students and the teacher using their Intel® Classmate PCs to acquire the skills and knowledge needed in the 21st century. Purpose-built for education, the PCs integrate easily into the classroom with their easy to carry and light-weight form factor enabling active day-to-day use by the children.
