Huawei Releases ATAE Cluster Solution

Published Nov 19, 2012

China-based ICT solutions vendor Huawei has released a new Advanced Telecommunications Application Environment (ATAE) cluster solution, which it claimed allows the leveraging of Operating Support System (OSS) management platforms to enhance network capability by 135% with operators now able to streamline their network management procedures.

As a result, the solution decreases required network space and energy needs by 75%, lowering overall operation costs and energy consumption, according to Huawei.

"The Advanced Telecommunications Application Environment cluster solution is a remarkable innovation because, not only does it provide centralised network management services; it also offers comprehensive support that enables efficient operations for network evolution, which will enhance user experience and overall quality of services," said Jiang Wangcheng, president of Huawei Wireless Network for Operating Support Systems and Services.

"By using the solution, customers will be able to manage their network more effectively without paying additional costs."

Network architecture in the mobile broadband era has become more complicated than in the past due to the growing communications demands of consumers. For example, in order to support various spectrum bands, multi-system and multi-layer networks are needed. The resource chain across wireless, transmission and core networks is also becoming more complex, resulting in challenges such as more complex operations, increased workloads and lower system reliability. Additionally, OSS hardware is also facing difficulties such as high costs, limited network space and lagging response times.

Huawei said its customisable ATAE Cluster solution allows operators to deploy programmable "blade boards" Single Board Computers (SBCs) designed for Huawei's integrated OSS software solutions. It supports centralised deployment of multi-technology products in one cabinet and one power source, which, Huawei argued, greatly reduces costs, as well as space needs, energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. The ATAE cluster solution not only shortens delivery cycles and provides speedy services, it also offers greater reliability with the ATAE board disaster recovery mechanism, said Huawei.

To date, more than 100 ATAE cluster solutions have been deployed by leading operators, according to Huawei. When deployed earlier this autumn on a leading UK operator's network using a single cabinet and single frame for its OSS management platform, Huawei reported that "the network's power consumption decreased by 75%, with occupied site space also decreasing by 75%; allowing for a 135% increase in management capabilities. Network reliability also greatly increased due to the solution's ATAE board disaster recovery mechanism".
