An Augmented Reality app for panorama photography, a learning game for medical students and an app for deaf language communication emerged among the best of the best in the 2013 World Summit Awards (WSA)- Mobile. A climactic Gala Dinner was held last night (Tuesday, February 5, 2013) at the Jumeirah at Etihad Towers by the Abu Dhabi Corniche – the Summit’s venue during its three-day run from February 3, 2013) – to honor eight mobile apps for content excellence.
After evaluating submissions from the world’s top mobile content developers representing nearly 100 UN member states, an elite group of international judges chose 40 entries that represented the crème of the crop from a pool of more than 420 products on the lead up to the Gala Night. The winning eight were picked by an on-sight panel during the Summit.
WSA-Mobile is the only Information and Communications Technology (ICT) event that gathers and honors mobile content developers and experts from over 160 countries. During the event’s culminating Gala Dinner, five winners under the 8 content categories of m-Business, m-Government, m-Health, m-Learning, m-Media, m-Enterainment, m-Tourism and m-Inclusion as determined by a Grand Jury of global experts are feted for their groundbreaking works. True to its theme of ‘Meet Excellence in Mobile Content 2.0,’ this year’s batch of winners presented the cutting-edge in mobile apps, games, images, music and video.
Emerging victorious were China’s iButterfly (m-Business & Commerce); Sweden’s Roadroid, (m-Government & Participation); Canada’s Project Noah (m-Learning & Education); Lebanon’s DerManDar Panorama (m-Entertainment & Lifestyle); Indonesia’s HARPOEN (m-Tourism & Culture); the Russian Federation’s and the USA’s News 360 (m-Media & News); Sri Lanka’s Prognosis Your Diagnosis (m-Environment & Health); and Brazil’s HAND TALK (m-Inclusion & Empowerment).
“Once again we were able to live up to WSA-Mobile’s reputation for being a global mobile content hub and a premier platform for recognizing the world’s best developers in this exciting field. We congratulate the winners who, aside from garnering honors, have inspired their peers to push towards the next breed of mobile content,” said H.E. Rashed Lahej Al Mansoori, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Centre (ADSIC).
“Abu Dhabi provides the perfect backdrop for WSA-Mobile given its focus on technology-enabled growth. This emirate already has one of the best e-Government frameworks in the region and this event certainly cements its reputation as a leading IT adopter. We appreciate the support of ADSIC and the local government in general in embracing the transformative power of mobile communications and services as celebrated each year by our event,” added Prof. Peter A. Bruck, Chairman, World Summit Award.
The Abu Dhabi Systems & Information Centre (ADSIC), the government body tasked to oversee Abu Dhabi’s IT agenda, hosted this year’s second edition of the prestigious WSA-Mobile global conference, exhibition and gala. ADSIC is exploring mobility and other technology fields to further accelerate the modernization of Abu Dhabi’s public services in line with the emirate’s comprehensive Vision 2030 development strategy.
