UAE Leads Global Rankings of Fiber-to-the-Home Deployment; R&M Capitalizes on Opportunities

Published Feb 24, 2013

Responding to increasing rate of Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) deployments by Telcos in the Middle East, Reichle & De-Massari (R&M) Middle East, Turkey and Africa, the Swiss structured cabling specialist, is further increasing its focus on this growing market. Jean-Pierre Labry, Executive Vice-President of R&M Middle East, Turkey and Africa has confirmed that the company has been working closely with major telecom providers in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Oman for large scale FTTH projects.

Mr. Labry also stated that the company is on the verge of launching new products to further expand its FTTx portfolio. These include the introduction of the new Venus FXXL solution with an integrated Single Circuit Management (SCM) system and field connectors which offer un-matched flexibility when planning building connections.

“The FTTH market in the Middle East is growing at a rate that far surpasses even that in mature IT markets. A report from the FTTH Council MENA has shown that the UAE already leads the global rankings with an FTTH penetration of 64.8 percent. Other countries in the region in particular Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt and Turkey are also investing in this technology and we are sure to see widespread penetration within a few years,” said Mr. Labry.

“These countries are venturing into this territory for the first time. While this is an advantage considering they are not faced with costly upgrades of legacy networks, it does present unique challenges and risks. R&M has been an active player in the region and because of our well-established local presence, we are in touch with the needs of the local market. By supplementing this local expertise with the extensive experience we have gained from similar projects in Europe and Asia, we can assist Middle East Telecom operators during each critical phase of these deployments,” he added.

Fiber has become a necessity and operators are paying due consideration to the future-proofing of these deployments. R&M offers an extensive FTTH portfolio which includes products like Optical Distribution Frame (ODF), splice closures, street cabinet, BEP wall mount solutions for building connectivity, fiber optic outlet and smart home cabinets.

Recently the company further extended its outlet family by developing a new Fiber Outlet specifically for use in ambitious FTTH projects. These optical outlets open up a whole new range of possibilities for subscribers while allowing providers to plan for future broadband needs. Thanks to these outlets, immense upload and download speeds are available immediately from the router or home network. Network operators and their media partners can thus offer new services and tap new sales potential. Thanks to customization of faceplates and design, building engineers, installation engineers, architects and interior designers can implement futuristic scenarios without having to compromise on aesthetics.

Shibu Vahid, Head of Technical Operations, R&M Middle East, Turkey and Africa said, “FTTH makes big demands on building entry points. This is where it is decided whether you can react quickly and profitably to changes and installation requirements and what will lead to a competitive edge in the end customer's business. The solutions we provide offer network operators flexibility in planning and implementation of building connections in their FTTH systems.”
