Trend Micro Announces New Mobile Security for Consumers with Privacy Protection for Facebook

Published Mar 3, 2013

Trend Micro Incorporated, a global leader in consumer digital information security, takes a fresh approach to protecting Android smartphones and tablet users with the release of Trend Micro™ Mobile Security 3.0. The 3rd generation personal edition of Trend Micro Mobile Security advances security to a new level by extending protection to Facebook information so that consumers can enjoy their digital lives safely. The new version also includes faster malware scanning and the ability to backup all of the user’s data in Trend Micro’s secure cloud.

“Android threats have grown exponentially over the past 12-18 months and we have now uncovered over 350,000 unique Android malware available in app stores and websites across the globe, including the Google Play Store,” stated Khoi Nguyen, head of Trend Micro’s global consumer mobile business unit. “We are estimating that by the end of 2013, there will be at least one million malicious and high risk Android applications in the wild.”

However, it’s not just malicious apps with which users need to be concerned. 680 million of the 1.06 billion monthly active Facebook users access the social networking site via their mobile devices.* For many people, it is the only way they access the service. Although Facebook has recently updated its security settings, according to Consumer Reports, more than one-third of Facebook users either don’t know about the privacy settings, never change them, or share everything with everyone, which puts them at a much higher risk of privacy violations.

To fill this security gap, Trend Micro Mobile Security incorporates the recently released Trend Micro™ Privacy Scanner. Also available as a free app, Trend Micro Privacy Scanner, designed for use with Facebook, provides an extra layer of protection for personal information on the social networking site. Trend Micro Privacy Scanner analyses the user’s Facebook settings and offers advice on changes to protect the user’s personal information on the social networking site. With a single click, users can easily monitor their Facebook page settings and control access to personal and private information, improving both customers’ digital and personal safety.

Trend Micro Mobile Security also includes Trend Micro™ Mobile Backup and Restore. This feature, also available as a standalone app, provides integrated data backup into Trend Micro’s secure cloud system. Contacts, pictures, videos, music, text messages, call history and calendar entries can all be automatically backed up via Mobile Backup and Restore. In addition, a new enhanced scanning engine also provides faster and more effective protection, developed to help mitigate any impact on the device.

“We’ve redesigned the UI to be even more user friendly, added fantastic, new, relevant features and the recent results from AV-test** show that the protection offered by Trend Micro is at the top of the industry,” said Nguyen. “Our users demand simplicity, however they also want that constant feeling of security. This latest version of Trend Micro Mobile Security accomplishes both, allowing our customers to enjoy their digital lives safely.”

Trend Micro Privacy Scanner is now available on Google Play.
