At the Mobile World Congress tradeshow in Barcelona, Visa unveiled its plans to drive NFC-enabled mobile payments under a new partner program, Samsung is a premiere partner of this program, which aims to "speed the approval and licensing of Visa-endorsed payment systems on different devices, including smartphones".
Under this alliance, the Korean company will incorporate Visa's payWave mobile payment application into all new devices from March 14. March 14 also happens to be the rumored launch date of the Samsung Galaxy S4 in New York. Coincidence? We think not.
You may remember that Samsung and Visa have teamed up before--a limited-edition Galaxy S3 was distributed to athletes to make mobile payments at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games.
Ovum's consumer analyst, Eden Zoller, said, "This [partnership] is desperately needed as for most consumers, mobile payments--let alone NFC--is simply not on their radar.
In Singapore, we've been talking about mobile payments for a while now, but it hasn't gained much traction yet. We know that the infrastructure already exists; Visa told us in a payWave briefing (unrelated to the Samsung-Visa partnership) that there are already some 11,000 contactless terminals set up nationwide. The company also confirmed that mobile payWave would be coming to Singapore, but did not commit to a timeline.
During the briefing, we got a demo of how mobile payWave works, using an Australian version of the S3. The S3 already had the payWave app pre-loaded. To see how you can make payments and top up funds in the account, do watch the Tech Buzz video below for more details.
