China-based telecoms equipment manufacturer Huawei announced the release of what it claims is the industry's first LTE small-cell router, the ATN 905.
The router is expected to help small base stations obtain high-rate media access across a variety of scenarios, allowing operators to extend backhaul network coverage.
Many GCC service providers have, in recent years, moved to the implementation phase after trialing small-cell technology. While many of these setups were previously suited to 2G/3G networks, Huawei believes service providers' simultaneous evolution to LTE will create further demand for solutions like the Huawei ATN 905.
The router is designed to meet the challenges of deploying large base-station routers into small base stations as a result of site and installation requirements. The device supports any media access, including fibre, GPON and xDSL, to offer additional resources for the existing network. The ATN 905 also supplies power through Ethernet ports to overcome issues associated with powering small base stations, and also enabling plug-and-play and remote service deployment to ease operations.
As a member of the ATN series, Huawei's base station router solution, the ATN 905 is said to provide an end-to-end IP RAN mobile backhaul solution with existing ATN products.
"With its rich-clock features and complete protection schemes, the ATN 905 also supports the customised requirements of service transmission on small stations," Huawei said.
In addition, the ATN 905 OAM (operations, administration and management) functions can be used to monitor Ethernet faults, allowing operators to quickly locate problems in VIP private-line services, according to Huawei.
"Within the past year, Huawei has pioneered a number of industry firsts within the global LTE market as well as partnering with leading GCC operators in planning, deploying and optimising LTE mobile broadband networks," Huawei said.
