Toshiba Launches its First Convertible Ultrabook

Published Apr 16, 2013

Toshiba Gulf FZE today launched its first convertible Ultrabook, the Satellite U920t, which "combines the performance of a laptop with touch-screen functionality and portability", according to Toshiba.

The 31.8cm (12.5-inch) convertible Ultrabook transforms from a laptop to a flat touch-screen form factor through a slide-and-tilt hinge design.

"The Satellite U920t offers versatile functionality to users who want a notebook and a touch LCD panel in one device," said Santosh Varghese, general manager, Computer Systems Division, Toshiba Gulf FZE.

"Operating in Windows 8, the U920t provides optimum usage for both content consumption and creation."

The convertible Ultrabook integrates notebook and touch-screen inputs, including a 5-point multi-touch panel that makes it compatible with a host of applications and games; an A4-sized tile matt-black keyboard with backlight; and a ClickPad with Windows 8 Touchpad support. It also features a Corning Gorilla Glass display with anti-fingerprint coating.

Powered by 3rd Generation Intel Core i5 processors for Ultrabook and Intel HD Graphics 4000, the Satellite U920t supports graphic-heavy content such as photos and videos. The U920t also features an integrated solid state drive (SSD) of up to 128GB of storage allowing faster boot-up times and data access. Toshiba records the maximum battery life as six hours.

The Satellite U920t supports near-field communication (NFC) technology that allows for short-range wireless communication between select devices. Users can pair and set up a peripheral wireless device through the NFC option. It also features a built-in Ambient Light Sensor (ALS) that automatically adjusts lighting conditions to save power, as well as an accelerometer, magnetometer and gyroscope for gaming.

The laptop carries two integrated USB 3.0 ports, plus a single HDMI port that allows 1080p full HD content to be displayed on HD screens. Its Sleep-and-Charge support lets users charge other portable devices when the Ultrabook is switched off. It also sports WLAN and Bluetooth 4.0 that provides fast wireless access to other devices, while the Intel Wireless Display technology allows any content to be streamed to compatible TVs.

The Ultrabook features a super-slim 19.9 mm profile and weighs 1.52 kg. The U920t's convertible design features a durable magnesium cover.
