Get Ready for 'Game Changers': Apple’s Cook

Published May 30, 2013

Apple Inc boss Tim Cook hit back against the company's critics yesterday, promising a number of "game changers" and hinting that wearable smart devices could play a huge part in the tech industry in the months to come.

"It's an area [that's] ripe for exploration," Reuters quoted the chief executive as saying at the All Things Digital conference, in California, US.

Cook predicted that a number of companies would enter the arena of wearable computing. So far, Google Glass is the only confirmed forthcoming wearable gadget among the major tech players, but Italian accessory maker i'm has had a smartphone-compatible wristwatch in production for quite some time as has Sony. A Samsung source also claimed the South Korean iRival had initiated a project for a competing product.

Cook's comments were in response to comments from a number of sources including Steve Jobs' Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, that the Cupertino-based iPhone maker had run out of ideas and was recycling existing products.

Apple's recent earnings have begun to slow as competitors such as Samsung grab larger shares of the market and affluent consumers who can afford Apple's products choose to stick with the models they have rather than buy the latest upgrade.

Cook did not directly confirm the existence of an iWatch project, instead focusing his remarks on the issues yet to be resolved in creating a viable market for wearable tech.

"There's nothing that's going to convince a kid who has never worn glasses or a band or a watch to wear one," he said.

Cook also hinted at Apple's plans for TV, which he described as going beyond the current streaming offering, and referred to a revised strategy for Apple's iOS platform, which will be announced at a developer's conference next month.
