New Video Technology to Record Traffic Violations

Published Jun 23, 2013

Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of Dubai Police’s Traffic Department, told Gulf News that he issued the first traffic fine on Thursday morning in Al Barsha using the new technology.

“The new system will be implemented from next week for traffic fines which will be issued on the spot,” he said.

“The new device will be used with voice and images,” he said.

He added that in the first phase of the project ten devices will be used by traffic police patrols in various areas of Dubai.

Major General Al Zafein said the technology is the first of its kind in Dubai and in the region. He said conversations between the police and the motorist will be recorded in both video and audio, and the information will be transferred immediately to the General Traffic Department. It will be archived so the police can refer to it at any time. The device will prevent any misunderstandings that may occur between the police and motorists, he added.

“The device will offer all kinds of transparency and integrity while issuing fines. The police will inform the violator that everything is being videotaped, and in the case of a woman there will be only an audio recording in order to maintain her privacy,” he said.

Major General Al Zafein said the police decided to use such technology because sometimes violators claim that they have done nothing wrong.

“We also want to be sure that policemen are dealing with the public in a civilised and considerate way,” he added.
