Uninsured Tech Enthusiasts Risk Getting Caught Out

Technology fans purchasing the latest wave of products without insuring them, risk losing money and exposing private and company data, according to the GCC’s largest independent financial advisor.
One of the busiest times of year for consumers purchasing new laptops, tablets and smartphones is around GITEX Technology Week and GITEX Shopper.
This year, corporate bring-your-own device policies are helping to drive new tech purchases even further. More than half of all employers will require employees to bring their own devices to work by 2017, according to IT research company Gartner, Inc.
Maria Salami, Client Marketing Executive Personal Lines, Nexus Insurance Brokers, said:
“Consumers are frequently purchasing new devices, but often do not think to insure them. While theft of mobile devices may not be a major concern in the GCC, people frequently lose or accidentally damage their mobile devices. This not only costs money, especially as mobile devices become more expensive, but potentially exposes confidential data, including work, private, personal passwords and bank statements. It’s incredibly important for consumers to safeguard their mobile devices.”
“If a household comprehensive policy is taken out, any losses due to events like fire and theft would be covered whilst the items are in the home,” added Salami.
“However, the most comprehensive way to cover mobile devices is to specify them under ‘All Risks’ policy for their replacement value. Coverage would apply anywhere in the UAE and be extended worldwide for 90 day travel per annum. It is important to check and be aware of insurer’s exclusions such as theft from unattended vehicles. These, along with the deductibles, tend to vary from insurer to insurer.”
“Losing or breaking a mobile device can be hugely disruptive. But consumers have a variety of options to protect themselves. To learn which insurance coverage is best, it is always a good idea to speak to an independent financial advisor.”
