e-University Showcases Middle East’s First Cloud Campus Initiative

Published Dec 18, 2013

As part of its commitment to expand e-Learning opportunities in the Arab World – also an essential component of the UAE Vision 2021 development plan – Hamdan Bin Mohammed e-University (HBMeU) recently participated in the Online Educa Berlin conference and exhibition held in Berlin, Germany under the theme ‘Learning Moves.’ The widely participated event welcomed 86 exhibitors from 100 countries as well as 400 academics, experts, international dignitaries and policy makers in the e-Learning and Distance Learning fields.

Dr. Mansoor Al Awar, Chancellor of HBMeU, delivered a presentation titled ‘An Innovative Solution for 21st Century Learning’ during a session on ‘Leadership for Change in a Time of Openness.’ Dr. Al Awar discussed the University’s social online learning initiative, ‘Cloud Campus,’ the first-ever affordable social online learning platform in the region which embodies HBMeU’s commitment to the Smart Learning approach.

Dr. Al Awar highlighted the importance of participating in Online Educa Berlin, the largest global e-Learning conference. He lauded the event as a premier platform for HBMeU to shed light on the Cloud Campus initiative as an effective integrated approach for promoting a world-class learning environment supported by cutting-edge technology. He added that the initiative is in line with the directives of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and President of the University, to reach as many learners as possible in the Arab World, Africa and Asia and achieve a radical change in education which is a major goal of UAE Vision 2021.

“The Cloud Campus is unique as it is the first-ever initiative in the Middle East to offer learners of different nationalities and age groups a convenient learning environment, advanced Arabic educational resources, and an innovative and interactive e-Learning experience. The guidance of highly experienced professionals who extend all forms of academic support and advice helps learners fulfil their aspirations through our initiative. Moreover, the Cloud Campus is vital to the effective transfer of modern knowledge and helps promote the concept of lifelong learning and a culture of e-learning among Arab students as it is primarily based on social media networks which are very popular among youths who represent the builders of the future.”

Dr. Al Awar also participated in the 2013 ICDE Standing Conference of Presidents (SCOP) held recently in Lisbon, Portugal. Co-organised by the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE), the event was attended by high-level international delegations. The annual conference provides a platform for exchanging information and discussing current trends and strategies for improving the quality of public policy on education. During the latest edition Dr. Al Awar spoke about the role of leadership in the future development of education around the world.

Cloud Campus, which is empowered by Global Learning S.A.R.L., a specialist in modern learning methods and techniques, is a ground-breaking yet affordable social online learning program which delivers e-learning services to all segments of society via personal accounts on Google+, LinkedIn and Facebook. The initiative reflects the strong partnership and common objectives shared by HBMeU and Global Learning. Participants have access to over 1,600 interactive online lessons in the fields of mathematics, sciences and IT for school students from first to twelfth grade, as well as business skill development for adults via 180 certified programs in Leadership, Communication, Marketing and Islamic Banking, among many others. Over 600 online lessons in the English language for all age groups are provided as well. Program benefits include Academic Support, Certification, and Multi-Screen Access.

Global Learning and its subsidiaries have led the market with its innovative solutions, including the first accredited virtual university and first accredited blended learning academy in the region. The team has also produced a large number of courses, sessions and learning objects, at school, university and professional development levels on par with international standards. Furthermore, Global Learning was the first to design, implement and launch a full-fledged social learning platform, Cloud Campus, in partnership with Dubai-based Hamdan Bin Mohammed e-University.
