Published Feb 23, 2014

SAP AG has become a sector member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a specialized agency of the United Nations. Headquartered in Geneva, the ITU is made up of more than 700 members and associates from the private sector and academia, in addition to 193 government members. SAP will participate in ITU’s Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T), which assembles experts from around the world to develop standards and protocols for the global information and communication technologies (ICT) industry.

The ITU-T’s standardization work is carried out by Study and Working Groups, in which sector members develop Recommendations for respective areas of ICT. To date, over 3,000 ITU Recommendations define the operation and security of the global ICT infrastructure. SAP will leverage its extensive experience as a world leader in enterprise software and software-related services to contribute to ITU-T recommendations for ICT related standard settings.

In June, SAP won a contract to to help the ITU manage more than 500 globally dispersed events and meetings every year.

“SAP is excited to help shape the future of the telecom industry in partnership with the ITU,” said Howard Stevens, global general manager, Telecom Business Unit, SAP. “Joining this esteemed group of experts, we look forward to developing partnerships and sharing our technological expertise and work with the private and public sector worldwide to the incredibly important goal of ensuring interoperable global standards for the ICT industry.”

“I am delighted to welcome SAP to the ITU-T,” said Malcolm Johnson, director of ITU’s Telecommunication Standardization Bureau. “The company’s contribution to this body will be immeasurable both in regards to technological expertise in the areas of cloud computing, software and business intelligence, but also its contribution to the overall mission of the ITU. We just recently began using SAP CRM and look forward to its contribution to the collaboration between our members in the standards development processes.”

SAP is planning to participate in the ITU-led key discussions on developing industry-wide standards in areas, including cloud computing, security, Big Data and Internet of Things (IoT)
