Schneider Electric becomes First Company in Saudi Arabia to Achieve ISO50001:2011 Certification for Energy Management System

Published Feb 26, 2014

Schneider Electric has become the first company in Saudi Arabia to be awarded the prestigious ISO50001:2011 certification with accreditation, marking a double conformity for its processes in energy management system (EnMS).

ISO 50001:2011 supports organisations in all sectors to use energy more efficiently through the development of EnMS. As with all ISO certifications, the ISO50001:2011 accreditation can be obtained by companies keen on integrating energy management into business practices, although it is not an obligatory requirement.

Schneider Electric identified its Operation Services at Schneider Electric EPS Ltd’s main office located in the second industrial area of Riyadh as the largest consumer of electrical energy and opted to get the site certified by end of 2013 as part of a management decision.

Ahmad Al Rashood Vice President of Business Development and Energy Management Solutions at Schneider Electric Saudi Arabia, said: “Nearly a year ago, we launched this process that would lead to all Schneider Electric sites in Saudi Arabia becoming ISO50001:2011 certified. We began with our facility in the industrial area that was our largest consumer of electrical energy. It took us six months to complete the process, and we have managed to achieve our target of saving up to 20 per cent of annual energy costs. Energy expended is monitored on an ongoing basis to ensure that we stay on track. One of the stipulations for the certification requires us to measure the results through our specialised software and dashboards.”

Maen Al Nimrawi, Energy Bureau Manager and ‘Go-Green’ Team Leader at Schneider Electric Saudi Arabia, said: “Towards achieving the organization’s energy management goals and establishing an effective energy management system, Schneider Electric drew upon the cooperation of a dedicated team comprising services, projects and delivery specialists, quality and customer satisfaction personnel, lighting and automation controllers, and human resources. The collaborative effort and the ownership that every team player brought to this project have paid off and make us proud.”

Schneider Electric’s StruxureWare Power Monitoring software played an important role in achieving the certification. This key component delivered a live online chart to the Energy Committee that updated every 30 seconds with data on instantaneous power usage for every individual on the premises.

In addition to the compliance process, Schneider Electric was assessed for total energy consumed in the design, construction, operation, maintenance and commissioning stages. With the development of energy efficient processes at the heart of the solution, Schneider Electric is on course to achieve a 15 per cent saving of energy per employee by end 2014, at which point all of its three manufacturing plants in Riyadh and regional offices in Jeddah and Khobar would also be ISO certified.

Al Rashood added: “With this achievement, we have established a solid framework for our energy management system. The ongoing challenge for the energy management services team at Schneider Electric following the accreditation is to continually monitor energy consumption and improve energy management systems for a more efficient and sustainable use of energy. We will continuously review and evaluate our business practices to identify and act on new opportunities for energy saving.”
