R&M, the Swiss structured cabling specialist in the Middle East, Turkey and Africa, has released its comprehensive 2014 Data Center handbook to assist planners and operators of data centers. Available free of cost as a downloadable e-book, the 170-page handbook contains detailed and use-oriented answers to all questions pertaining to the infrastructure and operation of a data center thus helping enterprises achieve optimum data center layout, cabling architectures, energy efficiency and security. It also serves as a reference work on relevant standards, technical terms, trends, applications and compliance issues.
According to IT research firm, Gartner, IT infrastructure spend in the Middle East and Africa is being driven by data center modernization efforts, coupled with new data center build out, by local, as well as international companies. Earlier this year, the firm predicted IT spending on infrastructure would reach $3.47 billion representing a 4.1 percent increase from 20131. With the data centers being stretched by cloud computing and ever growing numbers of users, R&M believes well-guided investments will be key to ensuring performance and future-proofing.
“A secure, reliable data center which runs efficiently is now a competitive advantage to an enterprise in any industry vertical,” said Jean-Pierre Labry, Executive Vice-President of R&M Middle East, Turkey and Africa. "High quality products alone will not suffice to achieve trouble-free operation. Nor is it enough to replace existing components with higher capacity ones. Well-structured and future-oriented planning is the most crucial prerequisite for the construction, modernization or expansion of data centers. As a specialist with years of experience in the field, R&M is capable of prescribing ways for customers to achieve such data center design. This has been our motivation behind the developing and distributing the data center handbook.”
Many enterprises in the Middle East are already deploying 40/100 Gigabit Ethernet to support high-speed connectivity required for cloud services, virtual computing and delivery of purpose built applications. The document offers practical solutions for these migrations to 40/100 Gigabit Ethernet.
The handbook is based on the years of experience of the R&M experts who provide support to the design and equipping of data centers throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
“Every data center has a different basic structure, which is sometimes not in conformance with standards," said Thomas Wellinger, Market Manager Data Centers at R&M. “That is why an individually coordinated selection of all relevant parameters is so vital in planning. This approach is the only way to achieve an efficient and reliable "nerve center" that is economically sustainable. Along with its own needs, companies increasingly have to keep legal influences and security standards in mind.”
R&M's Data Center Handbook is packed with the all the information and insights organizations need to build high-performance data centers. Focus areas outlined in the document include:
> Introduction to data center and classifications
> Data center planning and design strategies
> Technical standards, risk and compliance considerations
> Cabling architecture in data centers
> Integrating active components and network hardware
> Implementation best practices
> Content designed to inform and update data center and network professionals
