Infonetics Research Report Identifies Arbor Networks as the World Leader in On-Premise DDoS Protection

Published Jul 10, 2014

Arbor Networks, Inc., a leading supplier of DDoS and advanced threat protection solutions for enterprise and service provider networks, announced today that it has been identified as the top supplier of DDoS protection solutions overall as well as in the Carrier, Enterprise, Mobile and Government market segments according to a new report from Infonetics Research.

The report, DDoS Prevention Appliance Market Outlook, provides a comprehensive examination of the threat landscape, market drivers and solution providers. The report highlights the changing nature of today’s DDoS threat. Twenty-four months ago, the focus was on stealthy, complex application-layer attacks. In 2014, there has been a dramatic emergence of new varieties of very high volume attacks, like the DNS and NTP amplification attacks, that are pushing the boundaries of mitigation performance.

“DDoS continues to be a very resilient attack vector. Two years ago, financial services firms were dealing with sophisticated blended threats that combined application and volumetric attacks in a single, sustained campaign. This year, we are seeing a dramatic spike in very high volume attacks that take advantage of DNS and NTP amplification. Next year, we’re likely to see something new again,” said Arbor Networks President Matthew Moynahan. “What won’t change is the need for detection and mitigation capabilities on-premise, and in the cloud.”

THE HYBRID FUTURE

“We are starting to see strong customer demand for hybrid solutions that blend in-cloud or hosted DDoS mitigation with on-premise solutions and provide a single management, reporting, and forensics pane even as attack prevention moves back and forth from a provider’s cloud to the customer’s network,” said Jeff Wilson, principal analyst with Infonetics Research. “Arbor is ahead of the trend, first by connecting cloud-based services to their Pravail product, and now with the availability of Arbor Cloud, their hybrid solution.”

Arbor Cloud DDoS Protection for Enterprises

DDoS has become the primary threat to the availability of enterprise networks. DDoS was once a basic high-volume attack that flooded the pipes of its targets. The modern DDoS threat is a complex series of attacks that target not just connection bandwidth, but multiple devices that make up existing security infrastructure, such as firewall/IPS devices, as well as a wide variety of applications that the business relies on, like HTTP, HTTPS, VoIP, DNS and SMTP. These infrastructure and application-layer attacks are low volume, and they are designed to evade traditional perimeter defenses, and often target them. Best practice defense recommends a combination of cloud-based protection against high-volume attacks, combined with on-premise protection against application and infrastructure attacks.

With Arbor Cloud DDoS Protection, enterprises can now deploy best-practices defense in a single solution, with integrated mitigation from the premise to the cloud. Arbor Cloud helps protect enterprises against a wide spectrum of DDoS attacks, including volumetric, application-layer, state-exhaustion (e.g. targeting firewall/IPS), blended and multi-vector DDoS attacks. The ease of use of the on-premise Pravail® Availability Protection System enables existing enterprise IT staff to maintain control of mitigation, and gives them the ability to quickly alert the cloud when attacks reach a certain size that cannot be handled on premise.
