Space-Saving Angled Patch Panel

Published Apr 26, 2009
Swiss cabling specialist R&M (www.rdm.com) has developed an angled 19” patch panel, the R&M Angled Panel. Computing centers and local data network operators will be able to make better use of the space at the front of a rack. Until now, patch cords always had to be threaded into horizontal brackets at the front in order to be plugged into the flat patch panel. The R&M Angled Panel eliminates this step.

The new patch panel is angled instead of being flat. That means better use is made of the front of the rack, where horizontal cable management normally occurs. You simply lay the patch cords in the side brackets and plug them straight into the connector sockets. Handling is so convenient, the time spent on cable and network management is cut by several minutes per height unit. This method is also easier on the patch cords because they no longer have to be bent and threaded into the clips at the front of the rack.

The R&M Angled Panel is an advance for the widely used 24-port/1U grid. The great value for the money of standard copper cabling (Class E/EA and Class F or Cat. 5e and Cat. 6) can be further optimized with the R&M Angled Panel.

R&M Product Manager Regina Good-Engelhardt: “The R&M Angled Panel increases effi-ciency in assembly, the use of space and patching. Rack work becomes easier and therefore safer, more flexible and more cost-effective.”

A cable tie shelf at the rear is permanently attached to the steel structure of the R&M Angled Panel. With this step, R&M has increased the overall sturdiness of the arrangement. The cable tie shelf allows the level, parallel and stress-free routing of cables. Ground bonding is integrated and automatically established when the module is installed in the rack. Users have an easier time maintaining an overview of the rack thanks to a central patch-panel label, in-tegrated port numbers and enlarged labeling surfaces for adhesive labels such as P-touch. Colored clips from the R&M safety system can also be inserted.

Investment with a future

The Swiss cabling specialist is convinced that the R&M Angled Panel in tandem with the R&Mfreenet modular cabling system will be a cornerstone for the future viability of computing centers and data networks at companies of any size. The R&M Angled Panel can be inte-grated everywhere with ease whatever the task at hand, from a migration with R&M solutions to 10 Gigabit Ethernet to infrastructure compaction or the optimization of network manage-ment. Moreover, the R&M Angled Panels are sturdily built for a long service life and designed for consistently high availability, allowing users to meet whatever challenges lie ahead.
