Brocade Redefines IP Storage Connectivity for Data Centre and Disaster Recovery Applications

Published May 10, 2015

Brocade recently announced the introduction of the industry’s first and broadest portfolio of purpose-built storage connectivity solutions for data center and disaster recovery workloads. With a portfolio that includes two fabric-based switches (VDX 6740 and 7840 IP Extension switch), Brocade Fabric Vision and Brocade Network Advisor, Brocade is redefining network connectivity for IP storage and helping enterprise IT managers to effectively and reliably support ever-growing applications and workloads while improving service-level guarantees, containing failure domains, and reducing security risks.

EMC will continue to work to integrate Brocade’s new IP storage technology features into the EMC® Connectrix® family of network switches and management software.

“Traditional Ethernet switches are not optimized for storage. Gone are the days when IP storage was confined to low priority workloads such as file sharing and home directories. With advancement in technology, more and more, IP storage is being used to support new business critical workloads including server virtualization and big data analytics. These workloads must be managed under increasingly strict SLAs which require the highest level of network availability, performance and agility. If enterprises are to meet these demands, they need to move to dedicated networks for IP storage.” said Mr. Yarob Sakhnini, Regional Director, MENA at Brocade.

“Brocade VCS fabric technology and the Brocade VDX portfolio of switches were designed to address these critical factors. The result is the industry’s first purpose-built portfolio of IP storage connectivity solutions that will enable our customers to build resilient, high performance networks that are imperative to supporting business critical applications and disaster recovery plans.”

Added to the EMC Connectrix family in February 2015, the Brocade VDX 6740 switch powered by Brocade VCS Fabric technology delivers performance, availability, and management similar to Fibre Channel. Brocade VCS fabric solutions eliminate Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) to deliver active-active links, doubling network efficiency and improving resilience. This flat, multipath, deterministic mesh network is ideal for IP storage environments. Storage administrators can efficiently address business-critical SLAs with resilient, high-performance fabric network architectures and can manage the network and storage holistically to significantly improve IT agility.

The Brocade VDX 6740 switch offers the flexibility to deploy 1000BASE-T and upgrade to 10GBASE-T for higher bandwidth, delivers high performance and reduces network congestion with 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) ports, low latency, and 24 MB deep buffers, improves capacity with the ability to create up to 160 GbE uplink with Brocade ISL Trunking, simplifies network architecture and enables cloud computing with Brocade VCS Fabric technology, enables IP storage networking, provides efficiently load-balanced multipathing at Layers 1, 2, and 3 including multiple Layer 3 gateways, simplifies Virtual Machine (VM) mobility and management with automated, dynamic port profile configuration and migration and supports Software-Defined Networking (SDN) technologies.

The Brocade 7840 Extension Switch is a purpose-built extension solution that securely moves more data over distance faster while minimizing the impact of disruptions. With Gen 5 Fibre Channel, IP extension capability, and Brocade Fabric Vision technology, this platform delivers unprecedented performance, strong security, continuous availability, and simplified management to handle the unrelenting growth of data traffic between data centers in Fibre Channel, FICON, and IP storage environments. This evolutionary technology helps enhance storage and mainframe administrators’ ability to optimize the use of WAN bandwidth, secure data over distance, minimize the impact of disruptions, and maintain SLAs.

The switch encrypts storage data flows over distance at full line rate without a performance penalty, provides load balancing and network resilience with Extension Trunking to increase WAN utilization and protect against WAN link failures, consolidates Fibre Channel, FICON, and IP storage traffic from heterogeneous devices for high-speed, high-availability, and secure transport between data centers, delivers holistic management over distance for greater control and insight, achieves always-on business operations with non-disruptive firmware upgrades, extends proactive monitoring between data centers to automatically detect WAN anomalies and avoid unplanned downtime and enables ‘pay-as-you-grow’ scalability with capacity-on-demand upgrades.

Brocade® Network Advisor helps organizations simplify daily network operations and focus on strategic IT initiatives. This software management tool features customizable dashboards that enable organizations to identify network problems quickly and optimize their network resources. It also unifies management for the entire Brocade IP and SAN portfolio as well as integrates with third-party solutions, reducing the number of tools that organizations need to gain visibility and control. With its feature-rich, easy-to-use interface, Brocade Network Advisor automates repetitive tasks while helping organizations proactively manage their networks. It unifies network management across Storage Area Networks (SANs) and IP networks and accelerates data center automation through enhanced support for Brocade VCS Fabric technology.

“EMC customers are now deploying the Connectrix VDX-6740B for a broad array of our high-end and mid-range NAS and iSCSI storage platforms. They are being installed for dedicated networks and disaster recovery to realize the same performance, reliability, and operational simplicity as for our Fibre Channel offerings,” said Jonathan Siegal, Vice President, Marketing, Core Technologies Division, EMC Corporation.
