Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a market leader and award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, hosted the Samsung Real Dreams Award last week, at the Markaz Eadad Alqada with the attendance of Dr. Amr Salama, former minister of Higher Education.
Bringing together the fifteen best projects, Samsung Real Dreams Awards rewarded a grant of EGP 50,000 to the five best projects. The winning teams were composed of students from universities in Cairo, Helwan, Zagazig and Menya.
The grants were distributed to five student groups based on their actual prototypes. The selected projects are expected to be the seed for new business start-ups and other business projects initiated by students, following their graduation. All projects were evaluated on innovation, feasibility, relevance, research methodology as well as presentation quality and teamwork skills.
Mr. Duke Park, branch manager, Samsung Electronics Cairo commented: “We are delighted to give students the opportunity to explore, create and innovate with projects that will be beneficial to their first career steps. The project selection put forward to the panel, demonstrated innovation, expertise and will to succeed. These are important attributes for youth to acquire prior to entering the job market.”
The winning projects included a micro air vehicle, Robocon 2010; a project that aims to improve robotics technology in Egypt utilizing a number of techniques as well as a robotic Arm to identify and relocate different objects in its workspace with a video camera used as a visual feedback.
“I discovered the program whilst attending a seminar at the Faculty of Engineering at Cairo University and decided to join. First, we were chosen among the best fifteen groups, then amongst the best five groups. Our project, Robocon 2010, aims at improving the robotics technology in Egypt”. Samia Gamal, one of the lucky winners, commented.
Samia Gamal added: “Samsung Real Dreams Award program represents the ideal platform for us to be innovative and creative as it provides us with the opportunity, tools and knowledge to further succeed. On behalf of my fellow contestants, we would like to thank Samsung Electronics for giving us the chance to take part in a prestigious program with such a noble cause of nurturing the African youth.”
Ahmed Samir, another lucky winner, expressed his thoughts on the Samsung Real Dreams Awards: “I am proud to be part of the Samsung Real Dreams Awards program as it provides us with the right support and the opportunity to showcase our work. Throughout the program, experienced instructors helped us in developing our understanding and expertise necessary for us to realize our dreams.”
