The Explosion of Cloud Centres Marks a New Opportunity for Telecom Operators

In response to the recent news ‘Alibaba Cloud stretching its global reach with four new facilities’, Christophe Meunier, partner at Delta Partners, discusses how the establishment of new cloud data centres presents a huge growth opportunity for telecom operators to flourish in a crowded marketplace.
This news represents a massive opportunity for telecom operators on a global scale. Whilst it has been a challenging market for them, the emergence of new data centres from Alibaba could prove to be a jewel in the crown for the industry.
The sudden explosion of cloud centres in emerging markets will outline new business opportunities for telecom operators to unlock additional value by utilizing their strong infrastructural assets. However, before realizing this potential telecom operators need to adopt the right market entry approach in order to succeed in the cloud computing business. Below are three key approaches for telecom operators to pursue:
First, value-added reselling: This is when telecom operators don’t own or host any cloud offers, where they should look at reselling their existing cloud offers hosted by vendors. Second, cloud-enablement: Here telecom operators provide all the services of ‘value added resellers’ alongside the data centre, cloud hardware and provisioning platforms. Third, end-to-end cloud: Telecom operators provide all the services of ‘cloud-enablement’ providers, with the deployment of research and development services.
With such opportunities in existence, it is essential for telecom operators to mobilize themselves to act now in order to reap the rewards of this new potential.
