Nigeria celebrates 10 years of GSM
Nigeria plans to celebrate 10 years of GSM service in the country. According to Nigeria ICT Broadcasters Network (NIBN), an influential ICT body of producers and publishers, they will publish a documentary that features the mobile market transformation in the country titled “10 Years of Cellular Freedom in Nigeria.”

It is all part of the celebration of telecommunications development in the African country.

In a statement from NIBN’s President Bayero Agabi, the documentary is “the celebration of the advent of GSM in Nigeria in August 2001.”

Is Microsoft Buying Nokia?
A notable rumour going around: Microsoft is going to bid for Nokia, the world’s most prolific maker of mobile handsets, although passed now by Apple for revenue from mobile phones.

The rumour comes courtesy of Russian blogger Eldar Mutazin, who has form: he suggested last year that there were talks going on between Nokia and Microsoft over Windows Phone, at a time when everybody thought Nokia was going to stick rigidly to Symbian – since ditched. He has also been sued by Nokia in July 2010 over the fact that he got some hands-on time with some new Nokia kit – something they were unhappy about. (The lawsuit is a clue.) So clearly he has contacts inside the Finnish company.

Etisalat ready for Dh3bn investment
Capital expenditure on its UAE networks will be between Dh2bn (US$544.5 million) and Dh3bn a year, said Nasser bin Obood, the acting chief executive of Etisalat.

The spending would be focused on mobile networks, data cabling and IT systems, he said.

The operator's 4G mobile network would be launched "very soon", starting "with the main cities, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Sharjah," Mr bin Obood said.

Osman Sultan, the chief executive of Etisalat's rival du, said that his company was also looking to launch 4G services.

"Our trials have been completed. But there's no date to be announced now," Mr Sultan said. "Hopefully this year, but it's not a firm commitment."

Mr Sultan declined to specify du's planned infrastructure investment this year. Both executives were speaking on the sidelines of the Abu Dhabi Telecoms CEO Summit.

Philip Brazeau, who heads the telecommunications practice at the Middle East law firm Al Tamimi, said Etisalat's investment in a 4G network
