Survey finds 55 types of cancer among Arabs
A preliminary survey conducted by the Centre for Arab Genomic Studies has documented at least 55 types of cancer in the Arab population across the region, Khaleej Times has reported. Rapid improvements in the field of healthcare and dramatic socioeconomic changes have resulted in modified lifestyles that are believed to have contributed to the increased incidence of cancers among Arabs, the study said. “For example, the UAE shows a continually increasing proportion of cancer burden imposing itself as the third leading cause of death after cardiovascular diseases and accidents,” said Dr Ghazi Omar Tadmouri, assistant director of the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences’ Centre for Arab Genomic Studies.

Two mobile dental units planned for remote UAE areas
The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has announced Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, deputy ruler of Dubai and UAE finance minister has donated two state-of-the-art mobile units to provide dental care for children in remote areas, Gulf News has reported. The units would also be used to teach children the importance of good oral health, said Qadi Saeed Al Murooshid, director general of the DHA. "We intend to use these mobile dental units to carry out mass screening of students to raise awareness about the importance of dental hygiene and regular check-ups," he said.

Plan for $2bn Abu Dhabi hospital announced, open late 2013
Mubadala Healthcare, a unit of Mubadala Development, has announced Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, a facility being built on Sowwah Island, is set to open its doors to patients in the fourth quarter of next year, The National has reported. The hospital, modelled on the reputed Cleveland Clinic in the US, will have 364 beds, with the option to increase that level to 490, and is designed to operate five different specialist institutes covering digestive disease, eye, heart and vascular disorders, neurological treatment, and respiratory and critical care.

Sharjah health ministry signs medical waste contract with Wekaya
The health ministry in Sharjah has signed a contract with Wekaya, which specialises in managing the treatment of medical waste, Gulf News has reported. Wekaya, a first-of-its-kind project in the UAE in the field of medical waste treatment, was launched in Sharjah to preserve the emirate’s environment. Sharjah has 3.5 tonnes of medical waste per day, 15%-20% of which is considered dangerous and a potential health hazard.
