Saudi students in remote areas to get financial aid
The Saudi education ministry is set to provide financial aid to students living in remote villages to encourage students to continue their studies, Saudi Gazette has reported. According to the ministry, there are 596 male and female schools located in remote areas. Elementary students will receive SR150 a month for two full semesters while middle and high school students will receive SR300 for the same period, the ministry said.

International Baccalaureate introduced in Ajman
A new International Baccalaureate (IB) school is to be set up in Ajman on the directives of the board of directors of the Ajman University of Science and Technology (AUST), Khaleej Times has reported. Construction of the school is to be completed in the second semester of this year to allow the first batch of students during the 2012-2013 school year. The school will offer primary education with English as the primary medium of instruction with emphasis on Arabic and Islamic education.

Saudi issues terms for setting up private schools
The Saudi cabinet has set new guidelines regarding the various specifications and conditions for setting up private schools in the kingdom, Arab News has reported. These specifications relate to building plans, sites of schools, safety regulations and licensing procedures of schools built either at vacant plots or at sites designated for them or changing buildings constructed for other purposes into schools.

Lockheed signs scientific partnership with Saudi research institute
Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) has signed a scientific partnership agreement with US giant Lockheed Martin, Arab News has reported. The agreement will help KACST learn from the varied experience of Lockheed Martin, one of the world's largest defence contractors and manufacturer of a range of innovative electronic, information, aeronautic and space systems. KACST and Lockheed will also undertake joint research projects.

More UAE university campuses now non-smoking
The American University of Dubai (AUD) has joined a growing number of university campuses that have become smoke-free, Gulf News has reported. Starting today, AUD will implement its Smoke-Free Campus Policy, which bans smoking in non-designated places. According to the new rules, students who violate the smoke-free policy will be subject to a three-point warning system that could range from university ID card confiscation to registration being put on hold and eventually a warning and probation.
