Deep freeze hits UAE flights to London
Several flights from Dubai and Abu Dhabi to London were affected as Heathrow airport announced that only 70% of its daily scheduled traffic will be allowed to operate due to the cold wave affecting Europe. Emirates airlines cancelled four flights, both departing and arriving from London Heathrow, while Etihad airways announced that it is cancelling its two flights to and from London on Sunday. Emirates apologised for cancelling EK29 and EK05 – scheduled to depart Dubai at 09:40 and 16:30 respectively - and the return flights EK30 and EK06, due to depart London Heathrow at 16:35 and 22:00 on Sunday. “We will book passengers on alternative flights where possible. Passengers due to travel to or from LHR are advised to check the status of their flight using the flight status tool below, before departing for the airport,” said a statement posted on its website. Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), the country’s sovereign wealth fund, has partnered with US private equity firm Carlyle Group to bid for a near 40% stake in Turkish airport operator TAV Havalimanlari Holding, Reuters has reported, citing three sources close to the deal. TAV shareholders construction firm Tepe Insaat and Akfen Holding are selling 18% stakes each, they said. International air authority reports good 2011, challenges ahead
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has said global air passenger traffic in 2011 rose 5.9% year-on-year, while freight traffic fell 0.8%. Despite the increase in demand, the industry body warned that 2012 will continue to be challenging for airlines across the globe. “2012 is still going to be a tough year,” said Tony Tyler, IATA’s CEO and director general. In the Middle East, carriers’ traffic rose 8.9% for the year, compared with a 9.7% climb in capacity, putting pressure on load factors, which at 75.4%, was the lowest except for Africa. However, December ended on a more positive note, with traffic up 11.7% against an 11% rise in capacity and a load factor of 77.1%. Airlines in this region have slowed the pace at which they have expanded, but price competitive products and geographically well-positioned hubs are enabling Middle East carriers to continue to improve their share of long-haul markets, IATA said.
