Hormuz alternatives might not make up for blockade
Experts have said alternative routes for Middle East crude wouldn’t compensate for the loss of exports in the event of a possible blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, Dow Jones has reported. The use of longer alternate routes would increase transportation costs, said Peter Sand, chief shipping analyst at The Baltic and International Maritime Council.

No exemptions from Dubai Salik, misconception refuted
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has said that no GCC citizen will be exempted from paying the ‘Salik’ road toll in the emirate, Times of Oman has reported. “There is a misconception among people that there is no need to pay Salik for vehicles registered in the GCC countries,” RTA said. Salik utilises the latest technology for free flow operation with no toll booths, no toll collectors, and without traffic snags. Each time a vehicle passes through a Salik toll point, a toll of Dhs4 is deducted from a pre-paid toll account using advanced Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.

Phase two of Qatar Logistics Village launching in March
Gulf Warehousing Co has announced the second phase of Logistics Village, which will bring in additional 60,650sqm of warehouse and 50,00sqm of container yard, is expected to be commissioned next month, Gulf Times has reported. The company, which is aiming to double its seas and airfreight businesses by 2013, has also embarked on the expansion of its open yard in Ras Laffan for storing hazardous materials to be completed by the end of this year. The company had last year acquired 10,300sqm of open yard for the future storage of hazardous materials.

Second delay for Doha Metro tenders, $41bn rail project
Qatar Railways has announced tenders for the Doha Metro project are to be issued in the second quarter of this year, in the second delay in tendering the $41bn rail project, Reuters has reported. Last October, the company said it would delay tenders until the first quarter of 2012 in order to complete more detailed studies on the project. The project will include four rail lines and will link stadiums for the 2022 soccer World Cup which Qatar will host, with an underground component in the centre of the capital Doha. It is expected to employ more than 20,000 workers during the peak of construction.

New Sir Bani Yas Island port should ease existing hub pressure
Abu Dhabi Ports Co (ADPC) and the Tourism Development and Investment Co (TDIC) have launched a major port project in Abu Dhabi's Western Region, as part of efforts to take the pressure off the capital's existing logistics hub, Gulf News has reported. The Logistics Port on Sir Bani Yas Island "is now fully operational with three roll-on roll-off ramps, a boat pontoon and a control office," ADPC said. "Now, logistics between Sir Bani Yas and the mainland ports of Jebel Dhanna and Mugharrag Port have been strengthened. Goods and services transported between the island and the mainland will benefit from the new, modern facilities and easier access," the firm said.
